The major mechanism to drive turbulence in star-forming galaxies

چکیده

ABSTRACT Two competing models, gravitational instability-driven transport and stellar feedback, have been proposed to interpret the high velocity dispersions observed in high-redshift galaxies. We study major mechanisms drive turbulence star-forming galaxies using a sample of from xCOLD GASS survey, selected based on their star formation rate (SFR) gas fraction be regime that can best distinguish between models. perform Wide Field Spectrograph integral field spectroscopic observations measure intrinsic dispersions, circular velocities, orbital periods these Comparing relation SFR, dispersion, with predictions two theoretical we find our results are most consistent model includes both feedback as drivers interstellar medium. By contrast, where alone drives under-predicts dispersion galaxies, does not reproduce trend fraction. These therefore support idea instability makes substantial contribution high-SFR

Star-forming Complexes in Galaxies

Star complexes are the largest globular regions of star formation in galaxies. If there is a spiral density wave, nuclear ring, tidal arm, or other welldefined stellar structure, then gravitational instabilities in the gaseous component produce giant cloud complexes with a spacing of about three times the width. These gas complexes form star complexes, giving the familiar beads on a string of s...

Star-forming Galaxies in the 2dfgrs

We examine the environment of star-forming galaxies selected in the 2dFGRS. We find that bright star-forming galaxies display a significant deficit of faint neighbours relative to passive galaxies. If a deficit in fainter companions implies a smaller mass halo, data support a scenario predicting star-formation to be suppressed in all systems more massive than 1013M⊙, rather than in clusters only.

star-forming galaxies in the HDF-N

We present preliminary results from a programme to obtain multi-object nearinfrared spectroscopy of galaxies at redshifts 0.7 < z < 1.5. We are using the instrument CIRPASS (the Cambridge Infra-Red PAnoramic Survey Spectrograph), in multi-object mode, to survey Hα in galaxies at z ∼ 1. We aim to address the true star formation history of the universe at this epoch: potentially the peak period o...

Star-forming QSO host galaxies

Context. The recent finding of substantial masses of cold molecular gas as well as young stellar populations in the host galaxies of intermediate luminosity quasars is at odds with results of Hubble Space Telescope imaging studies since the latter appear to yield mature, quiescent early

Single star-forming galaxies and star-forming galaxies in SF + SF and mixed pairs

We compare the SFR of single star-forming galaxies with the SFR of star-forming galaxies in pairs. Volume-limited samples are compared selected from the 2dFGRS, applying a maximum magnitude difference criterion. We show that SF galaxies in SF + SF pairs typically increase their SFR as they get fainter, whereas this does not happen for SF galaxies in mixed (SF + passive) pairs. And we provide ev...
